2008 Sessions for students entering grades 1-8
Where Creativity Soars!

Join us for a summer of unique art-making experiences!

  • Sessions for students entering grades 1-8
  • Projects that place value on self-expression and the process of creating art in a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Chances to explore the museum’s collections with seasoned teachers who bring authentic art objects to life. 

From programs for fun-loving youngsters to the serious student of art, our popular classes offer something for every budding artist: 

  • First-Third Grade:  These programs are designed to expose students to a broad range of ideas and art-making experiences through theme-based classes.  The emphasis is on fun!
  • Third-Fifth Grade: These programs are designed to strengthen technical skills through medium-specific classes.  These classes emphasize developing observation skills and an ability to think independently.
  • Sixth-Eighth Grade:  Our programs for middle school students expose them to a variety of topics and art media.  The emphasis is on personal exploration.
  • Intensive Workshops:  These workshops are designed for the serious student of art entering sixth-eighth grade who wishes to strengthen technical skills and make personal decisions about style and content.  Students are given assistance in developing artwork suitable for a student portfolio.

  • Want to stay all day? 
    Programs for students entering grades 1 through 3 are scheduled for an all-day experience.  For students entering grades 3 through 8, programs are designed for half-day experiences, but can be combined to provide an all-day experience.  Intensive workshops for students entering grades 6 through 8 provide an all-day experience.

  • Early Drop Off/Late Pick Up
    Early drop off is available from 8-9am for $5 per day, per child.  Late pick up is available from 4-5:15pm for $5 per day, per child (an additional $1 per minute charge will be incurred for pick up later than 5:15pm).

Registration Information
Registrations are accepted on a space-available basis prior to the first day of class. Classes range from 15-20 students.  The OMA reserves the right to cancel any program that does not meet the minimum enrollment (10 students). 
Full payment is required before your child’s registration will be processed (we cannot hold a space for your child until we receive payment).

Refunds
All refund requests must be made in writing. Refunds, less a $25 handling fee, will be made if the student drops the class two weeks before the first class meeting.  No refunds will be made after the class has started or within two weeks prior to class starting.

It’s always time for high adventure in the world of illustrator William Joyce. Inspired by his popular children’s books such as George Shrinks and Rolie Polie Olie, explore painting, sculpture and more. Fiesta!

Celebrate Hispanic culture from various parts of the world as you explore weaving, yarn drawing and hand-building with clay. Create a self-portrait in the style of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and make a Puerto Rican festival mask.

JUNE 23-27
Ancient Mysteries
9am-4pm
Mysteries of the ancient Americas unfold as you explore kingdoms of the Aztec, Inca and ancient Maya, as well as ancient cultures of Florida! Weave a textile, craft a clay water jug, design a jaguar mask and create jewelry that any ancient ruler would have worn proudly.

JUNE 30-JULY 3* Spray, Squiggle and Squirt

Who says you have to use a brush to put paint to canvas? Discover unique approaches to creating art that Rembrandt never dreamed of. Like artists Pat Steir, Morris Louis and others, dribble, squeeze and pour as you create weird and wonderful masterpieces. Dress for mess!

JULY 7-11
Asian Adventure

9am-4pm
From the Japanese art of Gyotaku (fish prints) to Javanese shadow puppets, explore the arts of Asia as you learn about places and cultures from this fascinating continent. Explore brush painting, make a fish kite, and create a clay figure inspired by ceramic warriors made for the first Emperor of China.

JULY 14-18
Strut with Tut

9am-4pm
Walk like an Egyptian as you unlock the mysteries of this ancient kingdom! Design a mural on a pyramid wall, create a headdress fit for an Egyptian ruler, make a miniature sarcophagus and design your own hieroglyphs. Psss…don’t forget to tell your “mummy!”

Magnificent Masterpieces

Discover the secrets of great masters of art from ancient frescoes to the grid portraits of Chuck Close. Explore the cubism of Pablo Picasso, the pointillism of Georges Seurat, and the secret of blown glass creations by Dale Chihuly.

JULY 28-AUGUST 1 Ports o’ Call

Ships, ahoy! Sail the seven seas for a week of adventure as you visit the rainforest of Panama, explore ancient cultures of Greece and enjoy the beauty of Japan. While you’re on the “high seas” you’ll try your hand at scrimshaw and create a sailor’s Valentine.

AUGUST 4-8
It’s a Jungle in Here!

9am-4pm
Answer the call of the wild as you sculpt animals, create prints with leaves, flowers, and other things from the rainforest, make your own headdress and discover civilizations from the great jungles of the world. Explore the continents of Africa, South America and Asia.

George Shrinks and Other Adventures

9am–4pm
It’s always time for high adventure in the world of illustrator William Joyce. Inspired by his popular children’s books such as George Shrinks and Rolie Polie Olie, explore painting, sculpture and more, inspired by the exploits of his characters. This partnership program with The REP (Orlando Repertory Theatre) gives students an opportunity to explore storytelling as well as drama and creative writing. Campers spend the morning at either the theatre or the Museum and switch
locations for the afternoon.*

Students are dropped off at the Orlando Museum of Art and picked up at The REP Monday–Friday. Friday pick up at The REP includes a short performance to which parents are invited (details to be announced). Students should bring a lunch and drink. Lunchtime supervision is included.

Cost: $225; $205 for Members (of any one of the participating cultural institutions). Early drop off and after care available.

Cultures around the world have made textiles a fabulous form of art! Experiment with thread, yarn, basketry and other materials as you weave, dye, coil, and sew to explore the wonderful world of fibers.

Learn various techniques for using soft pastel medium, including drawing, blending, crosshatching and scumbling. Experiment to combine pastel with other media such as watercolor and acrylic.

Printmaking has been used throughout the centuries to create images, both bold and delicate. Learn basic printmaking techniques to create your own “lasting impressions” in black and white, and in color.
1-4pm Asian Brush Painting

Learn the ancient Chinese and Japanese arts of painting with black ink to create beautiful paintings of nature. Explore how to use washes and a variety of brush strokes to depict plants, animals and simple calligraphy.

Sculpture Mania

Explore the world of three-dimensional art as you create masterpieces that stand on the floor, project from the wall or hang from the ceiling. Experiment with mobiles, found objects and more!

It’s time to get down to basics! Explore fundamental drawing materials such as pencil and charcoal, as well as foundations of drawing technique to create line, shape, value, form and texture.

Learn basic clay hand-building techniques to create garden accents such as tiles, a birdhouse and a garden planter. Help make the garden a work of art!

AUGUST 11–15
High Adventure with William Joyce: Bugs, Gadgets and Dinosaurs

Master illustrator William Joyce created his first book in fourth grade. He was especially popular with classmates for his drawings of “Dinosaurs Eating Teachers,” and he hasn’t stopped yet! Join us for high adventure as we explore the world of his characters and stories, including The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, A Day with Wilbur
Robinson, and Dinosaur Bob and His
Adventures with the Family Lazardo.

Using the picture book exhibition The

This workshop is for students looking for a photography experience that focuses on seeing the world in new ways. Emphasis is placed on aspects of design, composition and perception, rather than photo developing or technical issues. No previous experience with photography is necessary; a digital camera is required.

Painting Four-day Intensive Workshop

This workshop is for students looking for an in-depth painting experience. Explore a variety of painting media and learn techniques from washes to impasto. Learn the fundamentals of composition and handling of space as well as color theory.

Installation Art Five-day Intensive Workshop

This workshop is for students looking for an experience that explores three-dimensional space in a creative way. Learn how to redefine existing objects into works of art. Experiment with paint, fiber and other media as you transform objects and build collaborative skills to curate an actual installation.

Printmaking Five-day Intensive Workshop

Materials fee: $20
This workshop is for students looking for an in-depth printmaking experience. Explore a variety of printing media and learn techniques from scratchboard to linocuts. Learn the fundamentals of composition and color theory as related to print media.
