October Series – Pottery

October 2, 9, and 23

Join us for our first afterschool clay program for young artists! Pinch, roll, coil, and slab to create unique pieces of pottery without using a potter’s wheel. Visit the OMA galleries for connections for design and application ideas. Learn how to refine your skills while exploring each session’s new forms and design offerings. You’ll have fun decorating your finished clay works with a variety of surface design applications including carving, stenciling, printmaking, painting and more. Come create with clay at the OMA!

DESCRIPTION

Who is Dave the Potter? How are his utilitarian stoneware jugs like vessels in the OMA’s Art of the Ancient Americas Collection? You’ll find out in this class! Visit Our Voice: Celebrating the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Awards and read the book Dave the Potter written by Leban Carrick Hill, illustrated by Bryan Collier. Then view the vessels in the Art of the Ancient Americas collection to compare with the images of Dave’s jugs. In the studio, create your own jug or vessel using clay and handbuilding techniques. Finishing choices include burnishing with slips, painting with colored underglazes, carving and decorative clay applications. Learn handbuilding skills, vocabulary, tool use and how to take a two-dimensional idea and bring it to life in 3D. Clay pieces will be kiln fired and ready for pick-up on Wednesday, October 9.
