Arts Society: Famous and Fabulous

January 9, 2018 @ 10:30am to Tuesday, April 10, 2018 @ 12:00pm

Council of 101 Meeting Rooms A, B & C

Join us for a thought-provoking and lively lecture series: Famous and Fabulous, presented by art educator Susan Rosoff. Each program begins with a light brunch followed by a lecture and concludes with an exclusive tour of the galleries to discuss related artwork.

FAMOUS AND FABULOUS

In a lecture series presented by Susan Rosoff, learn the stories behind America’s most iconic paintings. Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware is in almost every American history book, yet is full of historical errors. What gives? In Migrant Mother, photographer Dorothea Lange captured the misery of a woman and her children fleeing the Dust Bowl. Whatever happened to the family? Andy Warhol’s painting of a soup can set off a great debate; was it art?

Why did Warhol select soup cans in the first place? You’ll want to be in the know on famous paintings like the one where the lion and the lamb lie together in Peaceable Kingdom by Edward Hicks. Snap the Whip by Winslow Homer; Arrangement in Gray and Black (Whistler’s Mother) by James Abbott McNeill Whistler; Moonrise Over Hernandez by Ansel Adams; American Gothic by Grant Wood; Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth; and “comic book” paintings by Roy Lichtenstein will be among the many prominent paintings that will take center stage. Join us for an exciting year of learning about artworks that are both famous and fabulous.
