DATES
May 6: Yosemite: Majestic Mountains and Canyons
Yosemite has long been a favorite among the national parks. The first person to photograph it was Carleton Watkins, who inspired Albert Bierstadt. Like Bierstadt, Ansel Adams was transfixed by Yosemite’s impressive scenery. Modernists Chiura Obata and Marguerite Zorach looked at Yosemite in a way that revealed their more emotional response to the land. See Yosemite from exciting and different points of view.
June 10: New Mexico: Land of Enchantment
When we think of art that depicts New Mexico, Georgia O’Keeffe comes to mind as the woman who felt that it was a land of enchantment. We’ll look at her iconic canvases along with landscapes painted by friends and colleagues: Marsden Hartley, John Marin and John Sloan. Be enchanted all over again.
June 24: Massachusetts: Cape Cod
Cape Cod provided inspiration for many artists, including Edward and Jo Hopper and Edwin Dickinson. Joel Meyerowitz took tantalizing color photographs that capture Provincetown’s unique beauty. Other artists, including the undersung Blanche Lazell, focused on printmaking. Hans Hofmann, Milton Avery, Robert Motherwell, and Helen Frankenthaler also held forth in Provincetown, and their abstractions give sensorial experiences.
