Arts Society: Twenty-Twenty Hindsight

With twenty-twenty hindsight, look back one hundred years to the 1920s. In the aftermath of World War I, the world changed so radically that any sense of normal was hard to find. Innovative technology led to an economic boom that brought about the Second Industrial Revolution. Women’s Suffrage and Prohibition altered the way in which society viewed itself. Under these circumstances, artists expanded their creativity and challenged the norms and traditional ways of thinking, bringing new ideas to the fore. This program will be presented virtually. Participants will receive a Zoom meeting invitation prior to each scheduled program.

January 12: American Modernists
It could be argued that the invention of photography liberated painting from the yoke of representation. This session explores how artists tackled some of the themes of the 1920s. Among those discussed are Charles Sheeler, Georgia O’Keeffe, Joseph Stella, Stuart Davis, Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Florine Stettheimer.

February 9: The Stieglitz Circle
Alfred Stieglitz a photographer, gallerist, and impresario, had a stable of artists who made unparalleled contributions to the introduction of modern art in America. He gave unequivocal support to young American artists including Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Max Weber, among others.

March 23: Way Out West
Living in New Mexico in the 1920s was still considered “pioneering.” The interests of the Taos Artists Society, although not unified in style, reflect the landscape and people of the New Mexico. Among the artists included are founders Bert Geer Phillips, Joseph Henry Sharp, as well as Oscar Berninghaus, Ernest Blumenschein, Eanger Irving Couse, Catharine Carter Critcher, William Herbert Dunton, Victor Higgins, and Walter Ufer, who had a completely different focus than artists in the Northeast.

April 20: Americans Overseas
The 1920s found a number of American writers and artists living overseas. This session explores the wire sculptures of Alexander Calder and paintings of Gerald Murphy, Romaine Brooks, Lyonel Feininger and Rockwell Kent, perhaps names not well known to you, but powerhouses of the era.
