Huguette Caland: Outside the Lines, directed by L’Or Iman Puymartin, 2019, USA, 27 minutes.
This riveting documentary offers a window into the life and work of the iconic artist, Huguette Caland. Earlier in her life, Caland lived in Lebanon where she married and raised three children, while studying Fine Arts at the American University in Beirut. With the passing of her father when she was 33 years old, Caland had an epiphany, leaving everything behind and moving to Paris to pursue her career as an artist. With a bold and experimental spirit, she pushed the formal boundaries of art to reflect a feminist impulse.
A prodigious artist, she became recognized for drawings, paintings, and sculptures that embody a joyful, exuberant, and erotic sensibility. In 1970, Caland bridged the boundaries between fashion and art by designing a line of kaftans for the renowned couturier Pierre Cardin. She moved to Los Angeles in 1987, where she built her dream artist studio. Abiding by Middle Eastern traditions of hospitality, her home was always open to visitors from all over the world. Her art-filled home became a salon for LA’s creative community. Caland remained in California until 2013, when she returned to Beirut to bid farewell to her dying husband.
L’Or Iman Puymartin is a filmmaker and photographer who works in Lebanon, France, and the United States. She has written and directed several short films and has a background editing and directing commercials.
Monir, directed by Bahman Kiarostami, 2015, Iran, 54 minutes.
This documentary looks at the life and work of Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, who first garnered attention in the 1970s when she pioneered contemporary forms of geometric mirror works. Monir created an artistic language that was informed by traditional Iranian craft and architecture; formative years spent in New York in the 1940s and 50s and ongoing conversations with some of the 20th century’s most experimental artists were also part of Monir’s artistic universe.
The film takes an intimate look at the artist’s life and her practice. From her method of constructing mirror mosaics, to uncovering her past following the political changes in her own country and her subsequent migration to New York, and an artistic renewal sparked by her return to Tehran after an absence of 25 years, it offers an inspiring chronicle of Monir at the peak of her career.
“A necessary and moving documentary about one of the most remarkable artists ever born in Iran; this film beautifully captures the creative process and personal journey of a woman artist who after years of living a life in exile, returns home in her 80s, produces some of her best work, and finally receives the international recognition she so well deserves.” — Shirin Neshat
