The Whitney Women and the Museum They Made: A Family Memoir by Flora Miller Biddle
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was a sculptor and had little outlet for her work, which was true of a great many American artists. She opened her own Greenwich Village Studio for exhibitions of contemporary American artists, and after 22 years founded what we now know as the Whitney Museum of American Art. The Whitney women who followed her continued to be involved in the museum for three generations. Read the story of how these women dedicated their time and their fortunes to the museum.

The Art of Acquiring: A Portrait of Etta and Claribel Cone by Mary Gabriel
Etta and Claribel Cone, two spinster sisters, roamed the art galleries and studios of Europe and each amassed an important collection. They taught themselves art history and purchased avant-garde work by Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Cezanne and Degas. As close as the sisters were, they had particular preferences, but both were savvy and knew what they were doing. Their collection now resides at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller: The Woman in the Family by Bernice Kert
Abby Aldrich Rockefeller frugally collected modern art, even though her husband, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., couldn’t stand it. The book examines how she helped shaped the family to be culturally philanthropic and covers her efforts to establish the Museum of Modern Art.
