The OMA Book Club is for lovers of literature and art. Each month we’ll discuss a different text in relation to works exhibited at the Museum. Join us virtually for an afternoon of literary gossip! Participants will receive a Zoom meeting invitation prior to each scheduled program.

January 8: The Narrow Land by Christine Dwyer Hickey
Set in the summer of 1950 on Cape Cod, this novel reimagines the volatile relationship between artists Jo and Edward Hopper through the eyes of a 10-year-old neighbor. A meditation on the shadows of WWII and the effect of despondency upon creative practice, this novel will speak to all who respond to the Hoppers’ paintings.

January 29: Silver Sparrow: A Novel by Tayari Jones
This program is presented in partnership with the University of Central Florida and the National Endowment for the Art’s Big Read. Set in 1980s Atlanta, this novel describes the coming of age of two young women connected by a bigamist father and grappling with the heartache of secrecy. The discussion will be co-led by Dr. Keri Watson, Associate Professor of Art History, UCF.

March 5: The Other Americans: A Novel by Laila Lalami
A mystery surrounding the sudden death of a Moroccan immigrant prompts a multilayered story exploring the complexity of identity, familial tension, and emerging love set in a small Mojave Desert community. This novel, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, will be considered alongside works included in the OMA exhibition A Boundless Drop to a Boundless Ocean.

April 9: The Stationery Shop: A Novel by Marjan Kamali
This romance begins in Tehran during the 1953 coup d’état and tells the 60-year story of a couple who fell in love after first meeting in a stationery shop. We will consider this work of fiction alongside artworks from the OMA exhibition A Boundless Drop to a Boundless Ocean that engage with the complex nature of Iranian-American identities.
