The Nature of Art

Celebrate art as you enjoy projects inspired by nature! Explore traditional landscape paintings and photographs, as well as contemporary art, as you create collages, paintings, assemblages and more with “eco art” in mind. For students in grades 1-5.

Dates:
March 16 and 19-23, 2018

Times:
9am-4pm (full-day class)
Bring a lunch, a drink and a towel for a picnic. Please wear closed toe shoes and dress for mess!

SESSIONS FOR GRADES 1-5

March 16 – Tree-mendous Art!
Learn how to weave colorful designs using twigs as looms, while also learning how to paint a landscape using natural and recycled materials as paintbrushes.

March 19 - Creating with Nature
Explore the legends, cultures, and myths of the Ancient Americas by making shelters out of wood, as well as creatures out of clay!

March 20 – Passion for Fashion!
Learn to stitch, bead, and design your own fashion accessories inspired by patterns and clothing displayed throughout the galleries.

March 21 – From Drab to Fab!
Using found and recycled materials, fabrics, and embellishments, create beautiful wall hangings and sculptures inspired by Nick Cave’s Soundsuit and other unique works in the Museum’s Contemporary Collection.

March 22 – The Beautiful Outdoors
Capture the beauty of Lake Estelle, from the wildlife to the plant life, by drawing, painting, printmaking, and more! Students will find inspiration for their creations in the galleries by looking at landscape paintings, sculptures, and works done in clay.

March 23 – All About People
Discover the tools, techniques, and vocabulary that go into creating a portrait! Explore a variety of art forms and mediums as you create art and visual stories with YOU as the subject!

SESSIONS FOR GRADES 6-8

March 16 – Take a Walk on the Wild Side
Create unique drawings of animals while experimenting with mixed media including oil crayons, pastels, and color pencils! Students will be shown a variety of animal images for inspiration and guidance.

March 19 - Still Life Masterpiece
Explore Post-Impressionist still life masterpieces to learn how to paint what you see. Create your own canvas painting from a still life set-up that was made from things found in nature.

March 20 – Nature’s Collage
Gather natural objects such as leaves, twigs, shells, small rocks, feathers and flowers and combine them with man-made mixed-media including fabric, paint, paper and more to make the ultimate assemblage!

March 21 – Pop Art Leaf Printing
Explore the art of printmaking by looking at examples from the artist Andy Warhol. Create colorful prints of your own inspired by his style using a variety of leaves.

March 22 – Nature’s Tote Bag
Design your own canvas tote bag inspired by nature! Explore common shapes found in the environment and create repetitive patterns using fabric ink and markers.

March 23 – All About People
Explore watercolor, as well as color theory, as you focus on the beauty of natural forms. Experiment with painting flowers and other natural objects and experience the flow of watercolors. Enhance your painting with pen and ink and collage techniques.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Extended Day:
Early drop off (beginning at 8:00am): $5 per child, per day
Late pick up (until 5:15pm): $5 per child, per day

Refunds:
Refunds are given less a $25 handling fee. Written notice two weeks prior to the class is required. No refunds are made after the classes have started.
