MAGNIFICENT OBSESSIONS: CELEBRITIES AS COLLECTORS
Seeing private art collections provides a rare glimpse into the lives of famous actors and musicians. In this lecture series presented by Susan Rosoff, you’ll enjoy anecdotes of how, why, and where works were acquired. To a degree, each celebrity was obsessive about collecting, though each collection is unique. A few have eclectic taste—Steve Martin collects everything from Edward Hopper to Eric Fischl and Barbara Streisand’s homes include an array of decorative arts treasures. Others are a bit more concentrated—Edward G. Robinson preferred French Impressionism and Dennis Hopper focused on 20th century American art. Some collections reflect their owner’s cultural identity—David Bowie acquired important British artworks while Cheech Marin collects contemporary Latino art. From Greta Garbo’s pink apartment installed with Impressionist and Expressionist paintings to Elton John’s internationally significant collection of modernist photography, we’ll spend the summer embarking on a different kind of tour of the stars!
