This weekend workshop provides a supportive space for post-treatment breast cancer survivors to empower them to process their breast cancer journeys and promote healing through the creative process of art making. Using inspirational artwork for gallery discussions, meditative experiences, and art activities, the workshop provides participants with an opportunity for self-expression through the visual arts. Participants are provided with a framework and art materials to facilitate continued independent exploration. You do not have to be an artist to take part in this program!

Illume is an art and mindfulness program offered at the Orlando Museum of Art specifically for breast cancer survivors in remission or cancer-free. It is the first of its kind to be offered by a museum. The definition for “illume” is to illuminate, enlighten, and educate – indicative of this program’s overall intention to encourage mental and behavioral well-being among program participants.
Sessions begin with a facilitated discussion, during which artworks from the OMA collection stimulate group conversations on themes related to the cancer journey, including resilience, transformation, hope, and wellness. Following the discussion, participants will move to OMA’s studio classroom, where they are led through artmaking exercises that build on the topics discussed in the galleries and promote self-reflection. In addition to the individual benefits of the workshops, Illume strives to foster a supportive group environment that encourages empathetic connections with other breast cancer survivors that will continue to evolve. NOTE: Participants should plan to attend all three days of this weekend program.
All art supplies and refreshments and anything else required for participants will be included. Casual, comfortable clothing, sweaters or light jackets are recommended.
