Born is a monumental work which stands out as one of the artist’s best prints. It was published by Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) and this artist proof has hand applied silver leaf details, making it a unique copy within the edition. Smith created an important body of work that uses the story of Little Red Riding Hood to explore metaphors of birth, death and resurrection and the supernatural relationship between humans and animals. Born depicts a moment in the story when Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother are emerging from the belly of the wolf. It is one of many variations of this European folk tale in which both are swallowed by the wolf and later freed by cutting open the wolf’s belly.
