Taking inspiration from her design background, Lauren Mitchell explores color, form and line with how she sees Florida. She draws heavy influence from the history of the Sunshine State and seeks to connect the relationship of how events from the past affect the modern and often mundane experience of everyday life. Incorporating her daughter into many of her images, Mitchell also explores childhood and what it means to be in a place that has been left behind, reinventing landscapes by means of youthful curiosity and imagination. Her work has special focus on the aging suburbs of the Space Coast, where Mitchell resided with her family for ten years.
She received Honorable Mention in PDN‘s 2016 Exposure Awards for her ongoing Space Coast series. Recent exhibitions include This American Landscape, NESOP (2018); Making Strange, Praxis (2018); Fresh Squeezed, Morean Arts Center (2018); Snap! Summer Selection, Snap! Orlando (2017); The Journey, Morean Arts Center (2017); Home, Santa Fe Workshops (2016); and Cell Phone Photography IV: Moving Past the Camera, Texas Photographic Society (2016). Other recognition includes a scholarship to the Alex & Rebecca Norris Webb Workshop, MSPF (2016).
