Although this print by Elizabeth Murray is a cup, it is hardly a “still” still-life. The animated cup dances on a red chair to music made by the spoon, which has been transformed into a horn. The handles of the cup morph into arms that emphasize the jazzy rhythm of the work. Murray believed in fun. She said, “When I really know certain things are working for me, they make me laugh…It’s not something that I consciously do or that I consciously want. As if I say, ‘Oh, I want to make this a wacky, funny, goofy painting.’ It really is just what comes out…I guess it’s the most basic part of me.”
