Marsh Landscape

Louis Rémy Mignot was a close friend and informal student of the great Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826 -1900). Perhaps the most significant event of Mignot’s short career was a painting expedition he took with Church to South America. Possibly inspired by Church’s stunning paintings of sunrises, sunsets and evening skies, Mignot’s best work also included such effects. In Marsh Landscape, the sun has just slipped below the horizon and has filled the upper atmosphere with a brilliant glow. The simple features of the landscape may have been contrived in the studio as a foil to the drama of the sky above.
