DATES

Friday, September 5: Exploring Your Inner Galaxy
Blast off into creativity! Inspired by the space-themed illustrations in the exhibition, Jason Chin: Your Place in the Universe, this workshop will take you on an artistic journey through the cosmos and into your own imagination. Join us as we make Galaxy Jars—swirling, shimmering universes in a bottle! Using water, glitter, glue, and cosmic color, you’ll create your very own galaxy filled with the people, feelings, and dreams that orbit your world. As you build your jar layer by layer, we’ll reflect on what gives you gravity, what lights you up, and what makes you feel wonderfully small in the vast universe. No art or astronomy experience needed—just curiosity, creativity, and a love of stars, sparkles, and big ideas.

Friday, October 10: Tree-mendous Tales!
Get ready to twist, crinkle, and create! In this hands-on workshop, we’ll spend time looking and learning all about trees within the picture book exhibition, Jason Chin: Your Place in the Universe. Using nothing but brown paper bags, your hands, and your imagination, you’ll sculpt a one-of-a-kind tree that tells the story of who you are and where you’re going. You’ll decorate your tree with words, colors, and symbols that represent your story. Along the way, we’ll talk about what grounds us, what helps us grow, and how to stay strong—even when the wind blows.

Friday, October 31: Mask Making Mania!
This Halloween unmask your creativity! Be inspired by the art of Nick Cave, as well as masks on view in the Art of the Ancient Americas Collection. Decorate your own Halloween mask using paint, foil, yarn, gems, and more—each piece telling a story about who you are and what gives you strength. We’ll talk about how masks were, and still are, often used during ceremonies to symbolize or express something. We’ll learn how making art can help us express the parts of ourselves we usually keep hidden (in a good way!). Come ready to get messy, creative, and into the Halloween spirit!

Friday, December 5: Winter Moments
Grab your mittens and your imagination! Inspired by Leon Kroll’s winter scene, West Shore Terminal, this workshop invites young artists to explore movement, memories, and emotion through hands-on winter creation. Build your very own miniature ice rink using airdry clay and other fun materials! As you sculpt and decorate, we’ll reflect on what winter means to you—slippery, silly, peaceful, or playful—and how we find balance when things get wobbly. Come celebrate the season through creativity, conversation, and a little winter magic.
