Lecture: The Three Marjorie(y)s and How They Changed Florida presented by Dr. Leslie Poole

Florida’s women have been important activists in protecting and preserving its unique natural features. Three women in particular have had an enormous impact: Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings who taught the world about the beauty of the state’s rural areas, environmental activist Marjorie Harris Carr who led the grassroots effort to stop the Cross Florida Barge Canal in the 1960s, and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, an accomplished author who took up the protecting the Everglades in the last decades of her life. These three “Marjorie(y)s” remain models of activism and will be the focus of Dr. Leslie Kemp Poole’s talk. Dr. Leslie Kemp Poole is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at Rollins College and an award-winning writer and historian.

Following a screening of The Book of George, National Geographic Explorer George McKenzie Jr. shares how photography transformed not only the direction of his life, but also the way he sees the natural world. Through images spanning his early wildlife work with pigeons and rats in New York City to camera trapping Florida panthers, black bears, and other rarely seen species, George explores the patience required to reveal hidden lives, the importance of connected landscapes, and how the person behind the camera can change the conservation story being told. George McKenzie Jr. is a National Geographic Explorer, award-winning wildlife photographer, filmmaker, educator, and visual storyteller. He is the subject of the award-winning documentary The Book of George.
