9 a.m.-4 p.m. ONLY 3D Sculpture
Materials fee: $15
In this full-day workshop, use modeling clay, wire, plaster, and more, to explore a different sculpture technique each day! Create animal figures, a “selfie” carving, abstract work, and a face or hand cast. Work will include a weeklong endeavor, in addition to daily projects.
JUNE 8-12
9 a.m.-noon Food for Thought
Create delicious art that people will drool over! Turn your favorite food into a clay sculpture, design a realistic looking doughnut out of newspaper and paint, and ultimately have food become your muse as you paint and draw a variety of scrumptious items.
1-4 p.m. Art of the Cinematic Universe
Discover how concept artists design entire worlds for film, TV, and games—before a single character appears. Plans for these worlds are known as “cinemaps.” Explore environment design, architecture, and geography to create believable universes that feel cinematic and lived-in. Through cinemap designs learn how places shape stories and guide audiences through imagined spaces.
JUNE 15-19
9 a.m.-4 p.m. ONLY Funky Heads!
Materials fee: $15
Create a funky bust that is a sculpted or cast representation of a figure! Students will have the option to sculpt their self-portrait, a person/cartoon from popular culture, or one of their own character creations. Learn sculpting techniques from casting, carving, modeling, and assembling.
JUNE 22-26
9 a.m.-noon POP Art
POP out of your shell and create paintings, prints, collage, and more! Be inspired by famous pop art,such as Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s soup prints and Roy Lichtenstein’s humorous comic book styled paintings. Create artwork using methods that exemplify the excitement of the 1960s pop art movement, but that reflect today’s popular culture, color, and style.
1-4 p.m. Designing Style: Costume & Fashion Illustration
Characters communicate who they are before they ever speak. Spend the week designing heroes, villains, and complex figures by exploring how costume, material, color, and culture convey things such as identity, status, and purpose. Emphasis will be placed on iteration and silhouette drawing, with the overarching topic of storytelling through clothing.
JUNE 29-JULY 2* (no class JULY 3)
9 a.m.-noon Landmarks & Monuments
Explore the historic landmarks and monuments that represent America. Learn about Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, as well as scenic national parks and iconic memorials. Be inspired by Martin Lewis’ painting that features the Brooklyn Bridge to then paint your own scene featuring something monumental to America. Design your own mini monument that represents something important to American history today.
1-4 p.m. Artists Who Shaped a Nation
Discover legendary American artists who have made it into the history books! Learn about artists like Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, and Jasper Johns. Create artwork in the style of these greats, with equal passion and creativity!
JULY 6-10
9 a.m.-noon Painting 101
Enter into the world of painting by learning how best to work with watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media! Be inspired by the artwork in the galleries to create realistic still-life paintings, as well as expressive abstract designs. Learn how to mix color, add texture, and show form to create unique works of art to take home.
1-4 p.m. Supernatural Sensations
Dive into the strange, supernatural, and unknown! Design original creatures inspired by mythology, folklore, and science fiction, learning how anatomy, scale, environment, and behavior make monsters feel believable. From towering beasts to tiny, creepy crawlies, design creatures that will surely make people curious!
JULY 13-17
9 a.m.-noon Comic Book Creations
Discover what it takes to design the ultimate comic book! Learn how to draw comic characters, give them personality, develop the elements of setting, and build a storyline through sequence. You might create the next best illustration sensation!
1-4 p.m. Street Art!
Materials Fee: $15
Explore the visual style and history of street art and street artists while learning techniques such as stenciling, taping, mural painting, graffiti lettering, and creating an artist tag! Receive your own skate deck to design on, for either display or use (wheels and “trucks” not included).
JULY 20-24
9 a.m.-noon Art Through the Decades
Travel through time and discover different movements of art that span the last 200 years! From Impressionism to Expressionism, focus on a different time period each day and create two dimensional and three-dimensional works of art that reflect the decade and genre.
1-4 p.m. Art of the Poster
A single image can define an entire story. Learn how illustrators and designers create powerful movie and game posters that communicate genre, mood, and narrative at a glance. Through thumbnailing, composition studies, and final illustration, design original “one-sheet” posters that sell a story before the trailer ever plays.
JULY 27-31
9 a.m.-noon Drawing 101
Learn the fundamental language of art―drawing! Develop your skills while learning to add pizzazz to your drawings using value, perspective, texture and color! Work in graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, ink, and marker. Create dynamic works of art, such as a self-portrait and a still-life, to take home and display!
1-4 p.m. Linoleum Block Printing & Scratchboard
Explore the possibilities of basic linoleum block printing as you carve and print to create images in a variety of ways, as well as learn the basics of scratchboard.
AUGUST 3-7
9 a.m.-noon Collage Craze
Experiment with a variety of flat materials, both traditional and unexpected, as you learn the basics of an art form that blossomed with the Cubists and continues to be a powerful form of expression today. Be inspired by artists such as Romare Bearden who created images with cut paper and other unexpected materials.
1-4 p.m. Mixed Media Madness
Combining a variety of media in a single work seems contemporary but has been used for centuries. Explore how watercolor, collage, chalk, fabric, and other media, can be mixed to give works more impact. Paint, print, draw, collage, and sculpt!
