Women as artists have been under-represented for centuries. This series features female artists who chose women as their subject matter. The lectures span the period from the Renaissance to our current age. These artists place women – their gestures, individuality, and style – at the forefront. Join in seeing the ways women portray other women.
Presented by Susan Rosoff
2025 SEASON DATES:
April 29 – The Renaissance…and a Bit Beyond
Woe to be a female artist is the Renaissance. Most women had two options in life – marry or join a convent. A few women, most taught by their fathers, were able to have an artistic career. Among those included are Catherine van Hemessen, a Flemish painter; Lavinia Fontana; Sofonisba Anguissola; Artemisia Gentileschi: all from Italy, and Marie Victoire Lemoine of France.
May 13 – The New Woman
As women fought against the restrictions limiting their sphere of influence, new talent came for the fore. Marie Braquemond, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, and Suzanne Valadon all were French artists that emerged during the Impressionist period. Paula Modersohn Becker and Gabrielle Munter were two German artists who made their mark.
One can’t leave out Alice Neel, an American in OMA’s collection
June 3 – Contemporary Women
You may not remember the name of the woman who painted Michelle Obama’s official portrait, but we’ll look Amy Sherald’s portrait of her, along with others that skyrocketed Sherald to fame. Jordan Casteel, Hope Gangloff, Christiane Lyons, Jenny Saville, Lisa Brice, Joan Brown, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Elizabeth Peyton (in OMA’s collection) are among those discussed.
