Mel Kendrick’s jack #3 and jack #4 present a set of intriguing relationships between mass, void, volume and pattern. Each work has two parts: a block below that has several cylindrical holes cut through it, and the “jack” that sits on top which was created by reassembling the cylindrical elements removed from the block. The original forms of the sculpture were cut from Styrofoam and then cast in alternating bands of black and white concrete. The bands create a striking graphic pattern that shifts from horizontal below to diagonal on top, further emphasizing the origin of the jacks as part of the block’s core. There is a sure and confident logic in the works that seems to compound in complexity as each element is considered in relation to the whole.
