DESCRIPTION
How do our brains comprehend works of art? What is the neurological effect of viewing, analyzing, and creating works of art? Art meets science in this lecture series led by neuro-oncologist Dr. Herbert Newton. We’ll explore the latest neuroscience research related to art appreciation and visual processing. No prior knowledge necessary—this series is open to anyone with an inquisitive mind!
Dr. Herbert Newton graduated from SUNY Buffalo with High Honors in Psychology, before pursuing a master’s degree in Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He then entered the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, graduating in 1984. After an Internship in Internal Medicine within the SUNY Buffalo Health System, he was trained in Neurology at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, MI, followed by a Fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). At MSKCC, he trained under the guidance of Drs. Jerome Posner and William Shapiro. After the completion of his Fellowship at MSKCC, Dr. Newton joined the Faculty in Neurology at the OSUMC and James Cancer Center, establishing a Division of Neuro-Oncology within the Department of Neurology in the summer of 1990. Dr. Newton achieved the rank of Full Professor of Neurology with tenure and was bestowed the Esther Dardinger Endowed Chair in Neuro-Oncology in 2003. His interests include clinical Neuro-Oncology, molecular chemotherapy of brain tumors, molecular biology of brain tumors, and clinical trials. After retiring from OSUMC in 2015, he has since become the Director of the Neuro-Oncology Center for the Advent Health Cancer Institute and Advent Health Hospital Orlando. He has published more than 220 articles and book chapters and is the author or co-author of 9 books in the fields of Neurology and Neuro-Oncology. Other interests include scuba diving, photography, playing bass for his band – Stone Lotus, and the neurobiology of music and art.

$60 / Individual Sessions: $25 each, Museum Members receive a 10% discount on tuition
A full refund will be provided if a class does not meet minimum enrollment and is cancelled. A refund equal to half of tuition paid will be provided for cancellations made up to 7 days prior to the first day of the class/ program. No refunds, no exceptions, will be made if the cancellation is made less than 7 days prior to the start date. Refund request must be made in writing and should be emailed to education@omart.org.
